Tell Me About It
Before Israel became famous for its high-tech industry, it was known for Falafel and Hummus. And that's still true to this day. Although there are countless amazing hummus places, there are few that stand out, and Abu Hassan just might be the famous one of them all. Although no hummus can be crowned as "best", Abu Hassan, aka "Ali Karavan" by some of the locals, has established itself as the go-to hummus for locals and tourist alike. It's so popular, especially on Friday lunch, that its 3 branches can't handle the multitude of people lining up for their weekly hummus.
There are 2 main varieties of Hummus in Jaffa, the regular Hummus and the "Mesabaha" which is a mix of hummus, tehini and warm hummus beans. So yes, it should be served warm (although sadly, that's not always the case). Abu Hassan is mainly known for their "Mesabaha", so you should definitely check that out. You could also get a Triple ("Meshulash"), which includes Hummus, Mesabaha and "Full" (faba bean) which is an authentic topping, though it's not for everybody.
And yes, you're supposed to eat that raw onion with the hummus.
About this branch
This is the original Abu Hassan, so it's very small, and if you come on Friday - good luck finding a place to seat. But that's not all bad news, as many locals would just take it to go, and eat outside as there's a useful wall nearby overlooking the sea.
